Mr. Houtteman specializes in biotechnology patent acquisition, management, and licensing. Mr. Houtteman served as an Examiner for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office from 1992-2001 where he issued over 300 patents. He was a Primary Examiner in the biotechnology industry sector, and specialized in DNA diagnostic assays and DNA amplification methods.

Mr. Houtteman graduated from George Washington University (J.D., 2001), The University of Chicago (Ph.D., Genetics 1990); and Michigan State University (B.S., Microbiology, 1981). His doctoral dissertation topic involved molecular genetic analysis of artificial chromosome segregation in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. As a Post Doctoral Research Fellow he studied developmental gene regulation at Texas A&M University.

Mr. Houtteman published A DNA Polymerase Mutation That Suppresses the Segregation Bias of an ARS Plasmid in Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, 13 J. Mol. Cell. Biol. 1489-96 (1993).

Mr. Houtteman is admitted to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia, the Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit; District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, the Eastern District of Michigan and the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Reg. No. 55,919.
